If you’re like us and in the Northern hemisphere, you know that this year’s summer season has been hot! It’s not the right time to be without a reliable and well-functioning air conditioning system. If your system isn’t where it’s supposed to be (read: keeping you cool and comfortable!) use these tips to optimize your AC so you can get the most out of your summer!

A lot of customers think that making even small adjustments to their HVAC system won’t make a difference, but it will! These small steps can add up to significant energy conservation and save you money. Just remember, everything you to do save energy and make your system more efficient will help you in the long run!

  1. Regularly change your filters
If there’s one thing you do to take care of your HVAC system, it’s this! It’s so simple but yet so important. And the longer you go without changing them, the more wear and tear you’ll have on your system, so make it a habit to change them regularly. Most manufacturers recommend changing filters at least once every three months. Thinner and smaller filters might need to be checked more often. If you have any questions, ask one of our American Weathermakers technicians!

  2. Schedule an inspection
Speaking of techs, let us have a look at your system on a regular basis! The ideal time to get your unit inspected and – if needed – serviced is before summer starts, before it’s needed so often. You never want to wait until your unit is in obvious need of repair to call us (reminder, our phone number is 847.509.2024!) That won’t be convenient for you and could end up costing you more money!

  3. Ensure your home is optimized for cool air
There are ways you can optimize your home’s air to be cooler. Close your window coverings during the warmest parts of the day to block the heat. Restricting the sun’s rays will help keep you comfortable and take pressure off your air cooling system. When you’re cooking consider avoiding the oven and don’t set the dryer to a hot temperature. Save those two tasks for the evening when it’s cooler outside.

  4. Take care for your condenser
Your home’s outdoor condenser unit requires consistent care and attention to keep it in good shape and functioning well. Remove any greenery, plants and debris. Ideally, you should have a four foot radius for proper airflow. If your unit sits in direct sunlight, think about installing some form of shade – just make sure you’re not blocking air flow. Remember, the hotter the condenser gets, the harder it has to work.

  5. Weatherize doors and windows
This isn’t just for the winter months! To increase your home’s energy efficiency and comfort, add weatherstripping to the places around your home that are susceptible to air leaks. Even small gaps around doors and windows can let cold air escape and warm air in, and that adds up to utility costs over time that can be avoided. Bottom line is that when your AC has to work harder, it needs service sooner.

Lastly, consider upgrading your AC system! If you’ve had your air cooling system for longer than 15 years, you should consider the advantages to replacing your out of date system for something more modern and energy efficient.
