Edgewater is approximately seven miles north of the Loop and is bordered by Foster Avenue from the south, Devon Avenue to the north, Ravenswood Avenue to the west and Lake Michigan to the east.

Edgewater was considered one of Chicago's most prestigious communities in the early 1900s.
